Happy as a what???

We’ve all heard the term happy as a clam but I think that would not apply to the clams that are harvested for food. Hey, I love clams as much as the next guy but I just don’t think they’re all happy even though they have that gigantic smile.

I think I would much rather be in oyster. I know that they are also harvested for food, most people I know won’t even try to eat them. I love them raw on the half shell. I absolutely loved them. I also love escargot which again most people I know won’t eat them.

The tragedy is I have developed and allergy to all shellfish. No more clams, Oysters, escargot, lobster, clam chowder, crab etc. you get the idea. any of these foods will put me in anaphylactic shock. As much as I love these wonderful delights, I’m not willing to die for them.

Oysters are fascinating creatures. They produce pearls. Summer valuable some are not. The good thing is the pearls can be harvested without killing the oysters. the pearl is actually attempting to smooth out again of sand that got inside with a substance called nacre. It keeps coating it until it’s a pearl.

And that’s all I know about that.

  1. I did not know you could be a happy as a clam.
When I was as lad I was frightened of them, because in British comics square jawed heroic types who went swimming in the Pacific were always getting a foot caught in the ‘jaws’ of one….. of course they got free eventually! (Couldn’t end with the hero going ‘blub’ could we?)
