Who Put The Gunk In My Popcorn???

Our popcorn air popper died last night, so Heather used her blow dryer instead. I was amazed at how great it worked. I do wish she had used butter instead of gel and hairspray, though. That part was gross.

I can remember a time when there were only a couple of ways people popped corn. Either on the stove in a pot, under high heat and shaking it back and forth. You always put in too many kernels so the lid would start rising off. At that time, you had to shut the operation down, leaving at least 42,539 unpopped kernels at the bottom of the pot. A full stick of melted butter and a container of salt topped it off.

Then you’d grab bowls and start digging in. It was like playing Russian Roulette with your teeth. Somebody was going to break at least one. That’s why we rarely had popcorn when I was a kid. My parents couldn’t afford the dental bills.

And then of course, every kid’s favorite, Jiffy Pop! It was like magic watching the tin foil rise until it nearly burst. It was mesmerizing. When my Mom finished it, then opened it, the smell of the delicious treat would envelop the room while the steam melted her eye brows. Ah, those were the days…
