In hindsight, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a masterpiece, but at the time I’ll bet some people thought it was a real yawn fest. Yes, I realize the significance of the speech to honor the dead from the Civil War and to proclaim freedom and equality for all Americans. But I’ll bet there were some knuckleheads who were still trying to do the math when it was over.
Little known fact – when he said “Four score…”, Mary Todd Lincoln got up and slapped him because she thought he had cheated on her four times. The truth is, she was so crazy, as we all know now, I think Lincoln actually paid John Wilkes Booth to shoot him. Finally some peace.
There have been a handful of great speeches throughout the ages. JFK’s famous line, “Ask not what your country can do, ask what you can do for your country.” was allegedly taken from his headmaster George St John at the Choate School in Connecticut, which he attended as a boy in the 1930s. You know that headmaster went around trying to tell people he said it first. People were like, “Dude, you’re embarrassing yourself. Let it go.”
