Today is national siblings day. I don’t get it. I don’t know anyone who gets along with all of their siblings. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of my siblings today, but who knows about tomorrow? It should be, ‘Happy siblings you’re currently talking to today!’
My family dynamic is much the same as most people I know. Right now, I get along well with all five siblings. That makes me happy because it wasn’t that long ago that I was only friends with three of them. It was my fault completely. In one case it was a financial issue and in the other, it was a lack of a filter regarding something written that was really stupid.
What can I say, I’m a comedian. We’re trained not to have filters. That doesn’t mean that you can throw out all of the rules of socially acceptable conversation. What I might think it’s funny might hurt someone else. That’s never ok unless you think they deserve it. No! It’s not ok! I know!
The trick, which I’m sure most of you know, is to take a beat and think about possible repercussions. I do that now. Much better results. Then there are those siblings who are constantly borrowing money that gives them amnesia. Or the ones who brag about the fact that they don’t care what anyone thinks, they’re going to ‘tell it like it is’, regardless of the fall out. Those are the ones who are never invited to holidays, birthdays, etc., and become bitter.

I was deprived of siblings, so I cannot make any comparisons. However, I have siblings-in-law, and I suspect the relationship is much the same. I treasure them, but some days I would like to use them for a dartboard!

We’ll said, Jill! Got to love ’em but you can’t twist them into balloon animals.

Heh heh … I rather like the mental image that brings, though! 😉

Sheila & I are ‘only children’….
So we have three, two daughters and a son.
When something incomprehensible (to us that is) is happening between them, we just look at each and say …
‘It’s a Sib’ thing’
