My friend's wife gave him the cold shoulder for weeks. He finally said, "The only reason you married me is because my grandfather left me $10 million. "She said "Don't be ridiculous, I don't care who left it to you."
If you're single and have a lot of money, it doesn't matter whether you're male or female, you have to be careful. Fortunately, that is something I've only had to deal with once. And it was just the perception of money that got me in a precarious position. That relationship lasted only 14 months.
I think it would be difficult to determine who your real friends are if you were loaded, with money that is. Who was after your money or would continue to be your friend even if you lost every penny? That is what is hard to determine. I think if I faced that dilemma I would pretend that I lost everything.
My investments were all through Bernie Madoff, the IRS froze all of your assets, whatever. Just make it believable and see who sticks around. Those are your true friends. Then you can kick them to the curb where they belong, cut them out of the will, etc. Now you know.
I think I'll do the same thing with my giant collection of Legos. I'll say I was robbed and they took them all. Wait, I'm not sure it would have the same effect.
