I watched so much football last week, I ruined my end zone.
I was thrilled to see the Denver Broncos beat the New England Patriots Sunday night. Most of my friends were too. It made me think about why. After all, they are a great team with a hall of fame quarterback and head coach. So why do we love to hate them?
First of all, they rarely lose. Tom Brady takes the snap and releases the football faster than anyone in the NFL and is almost always right on target. Head coach Bill Belicheck seems to have the perfect plan for every single opponent. So why not admire them?
The Patriots have been busted a couple of times for rule violations and New England haters jumped all over that. They wanted to believe that cheating is why they were winning so much. The truth is that practically every team in the NFL and Major League Baseball cheat if they think they can get away with it.
Its why pitchers and catchers cover their mouths when they have a chat at the pitchers mound. Its why football coaches keep their mouths covered when they are speaking to the coaches up in their booth. Its also why so many players get suspended for using performance enhancing drugs each year.
I think we don’t like the Patriots because of their swagger. Their cockiness. Their perceived attitude. The only way to almost beat them is to get Brady rattled which is not easy. I don’t like them for a couple of reasons. I’m a Miami Dolphin fan (yeah, I know) and the Patriots have owned the division for a very long time and also because they seem to be the most likely to have a perfect season.
The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only team to win every game including the Super Bowl. They were unstoppable that season. I don’t want another team to do that unless the Dolphins do it again. Yeah, yeah, I know. I hear the advances in cloning have been tremendous. They’ve already cloned pets, so why not the 72 Dolphin team? Including Head Coach Don Shula. Except maybe Garo Yepremian. He almost screwed up the Super Bowl.
Sure, they would need time to grow up but we can wait. Talk about a talent pool! I would love to see that Dolphin team play today’s Patriots. That would be fun! Of course you’d have to replace Bob Griese and Earl Morrell with Dan Marino but that’s the only change I would make.
