How Dare You!!!

I used to sing in our church choir. One day after choir practice our music director asked me if I sing a lot outside of church. I told him I did but mostly just to kill time. He said, “Well you certainly have the perfect weapon for that”!

I love to sing. I wouldn’t say I have a great singing voice but decent. Just like most everyone music is a huge part of my life. I love it. Classic rock, pop hits from the 60’s through the 90’s, classic country, jazz, classical hymns … You get the idea.

I’m a huge fan (but I’m trying to lose weight) of Billy Joel. Anything he recorded. Some of my fondest memories of my kids and I is when we would turn up Billy’s (yes, we’re on a first name basis although he’s not aware) songs and sing along. I still do it but since I no longer drive I use a hair brush as my microphone and blast away. I’m pretty sure my neighbors hate me.

It is said that music soothes the soul. I think it depends on what you’re listening to. Hard rock doesn’t calm me, it irritates the crap out of me. It’s just not my thing. Others love it. I don’t see how, but they do. Different tastes for different people. Diversity is wonderful as long as I like it.

I sang on Music Row in Nashville. I didn’t have a band, just some crazy friends who dared me to ask the band if I could sing a couple of songs with them. I was sure they would decline but they said yes! I know! Now I had to determine which songs to choose. I was panicking and my friends were laughing hard.

This wasn’t karaoke, it was live on Music Row! The band finished their break and called me up to the stage which was more of a platform. I know I sang “Mamas don’t let your babies turn out to be cowboys” and one other song I don’t remember. The only thing I know is that my knees were knocking worse than Phil Spectrum at his sentencing.

I actually got applause from the audience and plenty of high fives from my buddies. I had done it. Cross one item from my bucket list. I don’t think I’ve ever felt a rush like that but it’s not something I would ever want to repeat. Karaoke used to fun but not anymore. It seems benign in contrast.

In the meantime, I’ll sing with the hairbrush and enjoy the choir from a distance.
See you tomorrow.
